Dennis Duermeier
Rocky Mountain Wooden Spoon Company
Handcrafted quality wooden spoons.
Dennis Duermeier has been making spoons for over ten years. Starting in Parry Sound, Ontario a decade ago, he now lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. He uses mostly Canadian maple and birch for his regular cooking spoons and woodenware. He has also made spoons from a variety of recycled pieces including pianos, boats and furniture. He recently started making speciality coffee scoops out of exotic hardwoods from around the world.
When Dennis first started making spoons ten years ago, five spoons a day was a good day. With a chisel that he modified, he carved out his spoons. He actually modified a woodturning gouge to do the work. His first spoons were uniquely primitive but still sold weekly at the Bracebridge Farmers’ Market. He progressed by trial and error, perfecting his methods, modifying a variety of machines to do the work more efficiently.
